SYNOPSIS
"It's easier to go ice skating in the desert than to make a socialist
musical" - this line of a song from an East German Musical, Midnight
Revue and at the same time the essence of East Side Story. Singing
tractor drivers and dancing factory workers in fitted overalls looking
for the socialist Cinderella? This documentary shows a world behind the
Iron Curtain that the Western World hadn't ever been able to imagine.
This documentary essay is based on clips from eastern European film
musicals intertwined with interviews of some of the filmmakers and film
critics of that time.
East Side Story has had cinematic and TV distribution in Germany, the
US, Great
Britain, Italy, France, Australia, Spain, Belgium, Brazil and Israel.
It has enjoyed wide critical acclaim and has toured various
international film festivals: Sundance, Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Berlin,
Sydney, Munich, Banff, Montreal, Seattle, Karlovy Vary, Istanbul, San
Remo, Pusan, Pessac, San Sebastian, Sao Paulo, Tampere, Wien, Tokyo,
Ljubljana, New Delhi, Marseille and many more.
